WulfBane's Magic Carpet

Exhibition Furniture Racer

For the fun of it, I'm building a "furniture racer" for the Robo Joust 7 event in June 2004.  Rather than doing a couch or chair that most do, I felt like doing something a little different.  In this case, I figured a "magic carpet" would be easy to do and a fairly different theme.

Overall Design:  The racer consists of two main parts.  One part is a platform that will have the rug unrolled onto and the front castors.  To the rear is attached the "power pillow", which will contain all the drive parts and be shrouded to look like a large cylindrical pillow measuring 10" diameter and 40" in width..

Drive system:  The main frame is welded 1" sq steel tube and 1 1/2" angle iron.  Attached are two main 10" drive wheels powered by NPC-T64 wheel chair motors at 24V.  Power is from four 12V 7AHr SLA's wired in such a way that they provide 24V 14AHr worth of power.  Motors are controlled via Team Whyachi TW C1 Contactors tied to hand held push button switches (look similar to the buttons Jeopardy contestants use)

Current Status - driving, needs cosmetic work.

Drive system is complete and the platform for the rug is done.  After the first test drive with the poor turning, I need to change the wiring so the motors will break when they are off rather than coast I also need to make the covering to make the "power pillow" look like a large cylindrical pillow.
